Computers at the Library
Internet Access
Attention: Each time you use the Internet, you are agreeing to the library's Internet Use Policy and Guidelines. The library reserves the right to halt inappropriate use of the PCs.
16 PCs are located on the first floor and six are located in the Children's Room. Users may sign-up for one hour per day per person. Patrons must be in the sixth grade or above to sign up for the Adult and YA PCs. To sign up, please use our self-serve, PC booking program. All you need is your library card to sign up for an available computer. We will issue temporary cards to visitors. The PC Reservation program ensures fair use so that everyone will have a chance to use the pcs. The program will also help users keep track of how many pages they print, so that they will know what they owe at the end of their session.
Two PCs (Research A and B) nearest the Information Desk are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a 15-minute time limit. The time limit for Research PCs C and D is one hour per day. Research takes priority.
There are two PCs near the circulation desk for searching the web-based catalog.
The Business PC at the Information Desk is equipped with a scanner and has the following software: LawDesk:Code of Massachusetts Regulations; Massachusetts Vital Records up to 1850; MassCHIP.
Software
Eight PCs have Microsoft Office 2000 suite installed. The suite includes Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Patrons are not allowed to install additional software because of security policies.
Online Databases
The Library has many online databases for research use. They are available on all PCs. These databases include EBSCO,Learn-A-Test, InfoTrac Basic, Electric Library, Grolier Online and genealogy databases. Patrons also have access to these databases from home.
Young Adults
Two Internet PCs in the Young Adult area are reserved for young adults, but are only accessible when there is a librarian assigned to that area. Three PCs for word-processing are available in the Young Adult Room (Quiet Study Area).
Free Internet Instruction
Introductory, one-hour sessions are offered on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. There is no charge. Please sign up at the Information Desk. For more information, see the Internet Training page.
Children's Room
Six PCs are available for children in grades five and under. Four PCs have internet access, and the other two allow kids to play JumpStart CD-ROMs or RollerCoaster Tycoon. Please sign up with the Children's Room at extension 29.
