Computers at the Library

Free Internet Instruction

Introductory, one-hour classes are offered on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. Please call the Information Desk at 978-531-0100 x24 to sign up for a class: Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Please call the branch libraries for information about their classes.

Internet Access

Each time you use our Internet, you are agreeing to the library's Internet Use Policy and Guidelines. The library reserves the right to halt inappropriate use of the PCs.

16 PCs are located on the first floor and six are located in the Children's Room. Users may sign-up for one hour per day per person. Patrons must be in the sixth grade or above to sign up for the Adult and YA PCs. Temporary guest cards are issued to visitors. Others must use their own library card to log-in to the computer.

Two PCs near the Circulation desk are available to search the web-based catalog. These do not require a library card to access.
Wireless is accessible on the first floor of the library.

Software

All PCs have Microsoft Office 2000 suite installed. The suite includes Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Patrons are not allowed to install additional software because of security policies.

The Business PC at the Information Desk is equipped with a scanner and has the following software: LawDesk:Code of Massachusetts Regulations; Massachusetts Vital Records up to 1850; MassCHIP

Online Databases

The Library has many online databases for research use. They are available on all PCs. These databases include EBSCO,Learn-A-Test, InfoTrac Basic, Electric Library, Grolier Online and genealogy databases. Patrons also have access to these databases from home.

Young Adults

Two Internet PCs in the Young Adult area are reserved for young adults, but are only accessible when there is a librarian assigned to that area. Three PCs for word-processing are available in the Young Adult Room (Quiet Study Area).

Children's Room

Six PCs are available for children in grades five and under. Four PCs have internet access, and the other two allow kids to play JumpStart CD-ROMs or RollerCoaster Tycoon. Please sign up with the Children's Room at extension 29.
