Find and Create Programs
1. Use local talent:
Pay attention to you patrons and the talents they have to share. Does someone know calligraphy, decoupage or quilting? Ask them to present a program!
2. Browse the phone books and the internet:
Surfing the internet is not always a waste of time. You may just find a great program or the inspiration for your next event!
3. Don't do all the work yourself:
Some programs, particularly weekly classes led by a volunteer instructor often come to run themselves. It's OK if you are not present for every minute of every program that you book.
4. Use local networks:
Talk with other librarians, library associations and the state library. In MA, we even have Program Planners meetings!
5. Create programs that run themselves:
For example, hold a raffle where customers get a ticket for every two books they check out. Get local businesses to doante prizes.
6. Know your community:
One program a month can be enough to bring in new patrons and to invigorate your job and your library.
